  5. INTRODUCTION
  6. ------------
  7. TUNE!IT is a program designed to tune musical instruments 
  8. by using a microphone or directly connecting your instrument
  9. (with a pickup) to the PC's soundcard.
  10. TUNE!IT automatically detects the pitch of the input signal
  11. and displays the corresponding note and its deviation from 
  12. standard tuning. Optionally it can display the spectrum of 
  13. the input signal, from  which the instrument's harmonics
  14. can be identified.

  16. Version 1.30 replaces version 1.20 and has the following
  17. enhancements/new features  :
  18.   - customised tunings to create instrument specific tuning sequences
  19.   - spectrum is now showing dB scale and has a Freeze button

  23. HARDWARE / SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS

  25.  - IBM PC compatible 386 upwards
  26.  - Windows compatible soundcard (e.g SOUNDBLASTER)

  28.  - Microsoft Windows (version 3.1 or Windows 95)

  33. The TUNE!IT package consists of the following files :
  34.  - README.TXT
  35.  - TUNEIT.EXE , the executable program file
  36.  - TUNEIT.HLP , the help file

  41. 1) COPY PROGRAM FILES
  42. Copy all TUNEI!IT files to an appropriate subdirectory
  43. on your hard disk (e.g. c:\TUNEIT) .

  45. 2) ASSIGN AN ICON
  46. You may use either use the Windows 'Setup' utility or assign
  47. TUNE!IT's program item to a program group via  the Program
  48. Manager's  "File/New" command.
  49.  
  50. 3) RUN THE PROGRAM
  51. If installed correctly, the program should load from the
  52. Program Manager screen when the TUNE!IT icon is double-clicked.

  57. USING TUNE!IT
  58. -------------
  59.  
  60. Make sure your microphone or instrument lead is properly
  61. connected to the soundcard. 
  62.  
  63. Start up TUNE!IT by clicking on TUNE!IT's icon. The 
  64. chromatic tuner with green note boxes at the bottom and
  65. an accuracy box at the top will be displayed. A red status light
  66. in the left hand corner of the screen indicates that TUNE!IT
  67. is ready for tuning.

  69. Play or sing a note and you should see the corresponding note box
  70. highlighted in red and it's accuracy displayed in percent in the 
  71. accuracy box.

  73. Play a reference tone by clicking on any of the green note boxes.

  75. Click on the Spectrum button to view the spectrum of your input signal 
  76. in real time.

  78. For a detailed description of TUNE!IT's modes and
  79. parameter settings refer to the online Help information.

  81. Note :
  82. If TUNE!IT does not respond to your input signals, check
  83. the following : 
  84.  - is the microphone level of your soundcard (usually adjustable in
  85.    your mixer) set up high enough ?
  86.  - if your input signal is very weak (e.g. acoustic guitar), adjust
  87.    TUNE!IT's sensitivity (General Settings) to a lower DB value until 
  88.    you get a response .   
  89.  - can you record your signals with any other standard Windows Wave 
  90.    recording program (e.g. WaveEdit) ? 
  91.  
  92. If TUNE!IT shows erratic readings from background noise, adjust
  93. TUNEITt's sensitivity to a higher dB value until the background noise 
  94. does not cause anymore readings. Alternatively turn the microphone level 
  95. down.
